Every time I visit Paris, what I love most is the beauty in all its smallest details. In particular, the elegant cursive writing on the street menu boards and the typography on signs always made me want to give French calligraphy a try!
パリを訪れる度に、その街のいたる所に潜む小さな美しいディーテールにうっとりする。特に、お店の看板やメニューのタイポグラフィーがステキで、フレンチカリグラフィーやってみたいなぁと思うようになりました。
I came across a long-established stationery shop in Paris – Mélodies Graphiques – while I was creating a calligraphy mood board on Instagram. The current owner of this shop – Hitomi-san – is a Japanese calligrapher and her French-style work is just so beautiful. I found their calligraphy starter coffret very interesting and decided to give it a try!
パリにある老舗文具店のMélodies Graphiquesさんは、カリグラフィーの写真をインスタグラムで検索していた際に発見。オーナーのひとみさんがカリグラファーで、それはそれはステキな作品を制作されているんです。フランスの香りが漂ってくるような、憧れの字体。そんなMélodies Graphiquesさん、カリグラフィーのスターターセットを販売されているので、手にとってみることにしました。
Due to Brexit, delivery from Paris to London took a little longer than I imagined, but this beautiful parcel really was worth the wait! Look at this elegant wrapping!
パリとロンドンは近いはずなのに、昨今のEU離脱の影響でヨーロッパの郵便は遅延気味。でも、こんなにエレガントでステキな小包が届くのなら、待つのも悪くない！開けるのがもったいないほどの美しさ。
The package included a textbook, pen holder, six different nibs, pencil, mini bottle of black ink, note pad and a selection of cards. These little items were set nicely in a cute box, all lined up. This just made me smile so much! Five of the six nibs are vintage nibs; it’s actually going to be my first time using vintage ones! As I have only learnt pointed nib calligraphy, I am looking forward to trying the differently shaped nibs for the French Ronde style as well!
自体のお手本が書かれた教科書とペンホルダー、ニブ6種類、鉛筆、黒インク、ノート、カード、必要なものが全部揃っています。しかもまたステキなボックスにきれいにセットされていました！並びが美しすぎて、箱を開けてうっとりです。ニブの内5つはビンテージニブだそう。ビンテージのものは使ったことがないので楽しみです。また、私はポインテッドニブしか使ったことがないので、ロンド体等を書くときに使うスクエア型のニブにチャレンジするのもわくわくします。
The textbook is a replication of a book originally published in the 1900s, provided for kids to learn cursive style. It’s all written in French and I need a bit of practice to read this, but is so atmospheric and I loved its authenticity.
歴史を感じる教科書は、1900年代に子供が筆記体を学ぶように発行されていたものの復刻版とのこと。フランス語で書かれているので、私が読みこなすには少々勉強が必要ですが、雰囲気と本物感でやる気が湧いてきます！
The only thing to note here is that this set is just too perfect that I was almost afraid to take things apart and start using them! Even the Paris map wrapping paper and hand-written Merci card played a role in enhancing the beauty of its finer details. It took me a while to even untie the ribbon and start opening the parcel!!! After a week of receiving the package, I still hadn’t started using it yet… but I will do so eventually and am hoping to order some more of their beautiful selections of goods; their card coffret on their website and some of the sealing stamps are tempting me already.
ただ、あまりにもセットが美しすぎて、なかなか使い始めることができていないのが難点でしょうか。笑 ラッピングペーパーひとつとっても、パリの地図柄がステキすぎますし、手書きのMerciカードも添えられていました。リボンを解くのがもったいないほど。手元に届いて1週間は鑑賞用になっていました。そろそろ実際に使って、フランスのカリグラフィーに挑戦していきたいなと思います。また、他にもオンラインストアで販売されているカードのセットやシーリングワックスがステキで、気になっています…
The owner Hitomi-san runs calligraphy lessons at the shop as well. Once everything settles down, I would love to visit the shop in Paris and learn calligraphy directly from her.
オーナーのひとみさんはカリグラフィーのレッスンも開催されているようなので、いつかパリを訪れる際にはお願いしたいなと思っています。
