I first heard about this musical when I was travelling to New York in 2016, being a fan of the Russian novel, (although War and Peace is too long even for me to finish) the concept of the adaptation of a 70-page story from the famous big novel tempted me. Unfortunately the schedule and the cost of Broadway tickets didn’t work out quite well for me at that time, so this West End premiere run is my first time watching it after all this time!
「ナターシャ・ピエール・アンド・ザ・グレート・コメット・オブ・1812」このミュージカルのことを初めて私が耳にしたのは、ニューヨークを旅していた2016年。ロシア文学は好きだった（とはいえこの舞台がテーマにしている「戦争と平和」は長すぎて読み切ってませんが）ので、有名な長編のたった70ページにあたる物語の一部を舞台化したというこの作品に興味を持ちました。当時の私は予定をうまく調整できず、ブロードウェイはチケットが高かったこともあって観るのは断念。回り巡って、今回2025年のロンドンはウェストエンドでついに初見となりました。
Since its very first launch in off-Broadway, this show has been evolved to the big Broadway scale version, and even had some international shows including in Japan and Korea. Apparently, this London version I enjoyed was more similar to the show when it was ‘smaller’. I personally cannot compare these myself as I only watched this one, but the very atmospheric and intimate setting of Donmar Warehouse definitely suited very well with the semi-immersive element of this show. Having heard the US version was played in a more dinner show style, London version was not quite as special, but some actors made meaningful eye contact at me when acting, and it made me feel more involved with the show.
この舞台の初演はオフ・ブロードウェイですが、その後ブロードウェイの大舞台に馴染むように演出も変わり、その後は日本や韓国でも上演されています。今回私が観劇したロンドン版は、どうやらその昔この作品がまだ小さかった当時の演出に近いんだとか。私自身が見比べられていないので残念ですが、ロンドンの会場のDonmarは比較的小さく、雰囲気が抜群の会場だったので、今回のセミ・イマーシブとも呼べるような演出にはとても合っていたように思います。アメリカでの上演時にはディナーショーを模した演出もあったと聞いているので、そこまでの特別感こそなかったのは残念ですが、俳優たちが観客とアイコンタクトをしたりと、観客も舞台に参加している感があったのが効果的な演出でした。
I felt this show is not necessarily something where you appreciate the storyline or the theme, but more to do with experiencing the vibe of the exciting music and the representation of each unique character by wonderful actors. With minimal stage sets, but with effective usage of the space and choreography, this production successfully made the audience travel to the high society world of 19th century Russia, with interesting people and lots of temptation that the protagonist Natasha experiences. The emotions the actors conveyed were so vivid, especially because you can almost hear them so close, almost without a stage mic… Chorus by ensemble members were taking place surrounding the audience at times, and was a very immersive way to transport the whole of the theatre to a special world.
I wonder if there is any plan in London to bring its Broadway version or ‘dinner show’ style one with food served at the audience tables, just like Dave Malloy envisioned, to recreate the inspiration from the actual Russian restaurant experience in the original show…?
本作は物語のストーリー展開を楽しむというよりは、素晴らしい音楽とユニークな登場人物たちを俳優たちの演技で楽しむ作品なのかなと感じます。必要最低限と言えるような舞台セットに合わせて空間を自由かつ効果的に使いながら、俳優たちの動きの導線をよく練って振付された舞台。興味深い人々と誘惑でいっぱいの19世紀のロシアの上流社会に、主人公ナターシャの目線を通して観客をいざなう、その雰囲気作りがとっても上手でした。俳優たちの感情表現が本当に力強く、特に小さい会場ならではのマイクなしでも声が聞こえるような距離感、またコーラスを客席のまわりに配置したりと、観客をまるごと包み込んでその世界観に飛び込ませるような演出の仕掛けが見事でした。
Dave Malloy がもともとロシア料理のレストランでの経験を元に描いたという、食べ物まで客席に登場する、ブロードウェイ版やディナーショースタイルの演出もロンドンに来たら良いのにな・・・！
