I’ve always wanted to see this musical and I should have gone much earlier…!
SIXは、ずっと観に行きたいと思っていたミュージカル。もっと早く観るべきでした・・・！
SIX is the ultimate comedy/empowering musical about the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII. The only one I could name before the show was Anne Boleyn, but now I can name all of them! The show runs in the format of a pop singer concert, making the six wives a pop group competing for the role of the ‘saddest’ one who would get to be the lead of the group.
ヘンリー8世の妻である王妃6人を主人公にした、コメディ調のミュージカル。この舞台を観る前に私が名前を知っていた王妃は2人目のアン・ブーリンだけでしたが、見終わった今、6人全員をその半生とともに語ることができます・・・ミュージカルは、その6人の元妻たちが集ってポップミュージックグループとしてコンサートをしているという形式で進みます。一番「悲惨だった王妃」がグループのリードになるという取り決めで、歌合戦をします。
The setting sounded rather hilarious, but the entire plot was so beautifully structured. They successfully bring the six wives who were not so well acknowledged in history into the bright light, by literally reclaiming their ‘voice’ to the world through their microphone!
このなんとも奇妙な設定が、本当にうまく造りこまれており、素晴らしいノンストップの約90分。あまり知られていない妻たちの歴史に光を当て、言葉通りマイクを通してその声を取り戻していく様子が圧巻でした。
Each of the six had a killer tune to sing just like a real pop star (there is said to be a model for each of them, and I could tell that from the way they sing!!!), and I started singing all of them after the show! My favourites were the song for the pop punk-ish Anne Boleyn and the very club sounding Anne of Cleves.
6人の王妃が歌うそれぞれの歌が秀逸。それぞれの曲にモデルとなった実際のポップスターがいたそうで、確かにその面影が見えてくるようなリアルなポップスター具合です。耳に残るキャッチーな歌は、観劇後思わず口ずさんでしまうほど。私が特に好きだったのは、ポップパンクの王道のようなアン・ブーリンと、クラブ調のサウンドがかっこいいアナ・オブ・クレーヴスでした。
‘Divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived…’ this simple phrase was very effectively used to explain the context, as well as utilised very well in the music too. Very pop star-ish choreography was so well matched with the overall tone, together with armour-styled costumes.
「離婚、打首、死亡、離婚、打首、死別」この象徴的なフレーズが効果的に使われて、テューダー朝の歴史を知らない観客でもスッキリとその歴史を理解できるようになっています。いかにもガールズグループというような振付と鎧をモチーフにしたような衣装も相まって、独特の世界観を演出することに大成功していると言えます。
In the historians’ eyes, this musical probably sounds a bit too casual in terms of how to retell the story of the historic figure, and probably most of the audience including myself would not know the actual reality of their history very well either. This work took this marginality of these former queens in history so cleverly to reintroduce them into the world, with a strong sense of a feminist twist that empowers the audience so excitingly. Even the ‘victimhood’ at the beginning was flipped in the very best way at the end…!
So gutted to miss the most recent work by the creators @thetobymarlow and @mucyloss ‘Why Am I So Single’ in its London run this year. Hopefully there will be another chance soon!
歴史家の視点で見るならば、このミュージカルは壮絶かつスキャンダルな王妃6人の歴史をカジュアルに語りすぎている感はあります。あまり知られていない歴史上の人物だからこそ、軽いノリで悲惨さを語っていくことに懸念もあるかもしれません。でも、そのコンテクストを逆手にとって、みんなが知らない歴史を効果的かつユニークな方法で世界の表舞台に連れ戻し、しかもフェミニスト的な視点から楽しいナラティブに仕上げてしまったその手腕はお見事。被害者的視点でスタートした物語が、最後の美しい幕引きにつながるのも最高でした。
クリエイターのトビー・マーロウとルーシー・モスの最新作「Why Am I So Single」が最近ロンドンで上演されていたのですが、見逃してしまったのが悔しい・・・！
